Following early careers in catering and then mechanical engineering I studied Rural Resource Management at Seale Hayne (University of Plymouth). This was followed by work with the Environment Agency carrying out environmental monitoring. Since 1999 I have worked with Natural England delivering and managing agri-environment schemes in Devon and Somerset. I assisted with the design and delivery of the Organic Entry Level Stewardship Scheme and took a seat on both the Technical and Certification committees of the Advisory Committee on Organic Standards (ACOS) for Defra. I also collaborated with ORC to develop the Public Goods Tool.
More recently I developed the organic support mechanism under the new Countryside Stewardship scheme and am now seconded to Defra full time. I provide technical advice to policy officials and manage the organic elements of the R&D programme which includes membership of the governing board of a trans-European organic research network.
Outside of work I enjoy field sports, trail riding as well as sailing and walking on Dartmoor where I live with my wife and a slightly potty lurcher called Flint.
