The Nutrient Benefits of Cover Crops: Online Webinar

Date : 23rd June 2025 | 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Venue : Online

Join ADAS for this free webinar to hear about the latest research from Affinity Water on cover crop nitrogen release.

Cover crops can be very effective at protecting and improving soil and water quality by providing soil cover over winter, retaining nutrients that would otherwise have been ‘lost’ via leaching and erosion. They can also help to control weeds and soil-borne pathogens and pests.

For the benefits of cover crops to be fully realised, understanding their crop available nitrogen supply and long-term impact on nitrate leaching and crop performance is crucial.

During this webinar, we will also share results from the ‘Nutrient Management following cover crops’ farmer/agronomist survey, completed as part of the Cover crop decision support tool (DST) scoping project’.

Agenda

  • 12:00 Introduction (5 minutes) – Dr Rachel Thorman, ADAS Principal Soil Scientist
  • 12:05 Nitrogen Release from Cover Crops (NiCCs2) project results (20 minutes) – Dr Anne Bhogal, ADAS Principal Soil Scientist. Anne will share the results from the second phase of the Nitrogen release from Cover Crops project (NiCCs). Building on the findings of NiCCs phase one, this project has looked at the effect of different destruction methods and timings on the nitrogen release from cover crops.
  • 12:25 Survey results on nutrient management following cover crops (20 minutes) – Dr Kate Smith, ADAS Principal Soil Scientist. Kate will share results from the recent farmer/ agronomist survey carried out as part of the ‘Cover crop decision support tool (DST) scoping project’.
  • 12:45 Questions and discussion (15 minutes)
