Big Give Feed the Soil appeal

Save The Date! For one week only (18 – 25 April 2024), double your donation to The Organic Research Centre with the Big Give Green Match Fund 2024

The Organic Research Centre (ORC) is taking part in the Big Give Green Match Fund 2024 to raise £100,000 in just one week for their Feed the Soil appeal.

Six million hectares of soil in the UK are at risk of degradation, leading to increased environmental hazards such as droughts, floods, water pollution, biodiversity loss and reducing the soil’s ability to sequester carbon. Additionally, poor soil health negatively affects food quality which in turn can exacerbate chronic illnesses.

In response to alarming soil health decline in the UK, ORC is partnering with The Land Gardeners on a project to explore organic composting methods to restore soil health and sustainability. A comparison of different composting methods and application strategies under robust, controlled, conditions will be undertaken, so that clear guidance for farmers can be developed.

Lucy MacLennan, ORC’s CEO:

“The Feed The Soil project is budgeted at £200,000 and is anticipated to be delivered over 2 years. By participating in the Big Give Green Match fund we hope to raise half our project target in just one week. Donations to our Feed The Soil appeal, given in campaign week, 18 – 25 April, will be generously matched by The Mark Leonard Trust and The Reed Foundation. This means any donation you make will be doubled!”

Henrietta Courtauld and Bridget Elworthy ‘The Land Gardeners’:

“The project will establish a research and knowledge exchange programme on an organic estate linked to a network of satellite sites which are currently trialling a range of approaches to feeding the soil. We are excited to be part of a project that has the potential to reduce reliance on synthetic crop inputs and improve soil microbial diversity and function.”
