Living Mulches, Intercropping & Soil Health at the Fring Estate

Date : 5th June 2025 | 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Venue : Heath Farm, Great Bircham, King's Lynn, PE31 6RL

Field-based insights into living mulches, intercropping, and resilient soils

Join us for an afternoon at the Fring Estate for this Agricology and Oper8 event, where we’ll explore how living mulches and intercropping trials are being used to build soil health and resilience. Estate Manager Matt England will guide us through the systems he’s trialling, sharing both the benefits and challenges he’s encountering on the ground.

Soil advisor Ian Robertson will join us to unpack the science behind these practices – connecting field observations with deeper insights into nutrient cycling, soil function, and whole-farm fertility. Together, we’ll examine how farmer-led innovation and soil science can work hand-in-hand to address rotational challenges, restore system balance, and improve soil health indicators.

We’ll also look beyond the immediate trials to explore wider actions across the rotation, including biostimulant trials, integrating pigs into arable systems, and the role of cover crops in building fertility.

This free event is run in collaboration with Agricology and the Oper8 Project, and will include discussion of Agricology’s new technical guide on living mulches and their role in weed management for low-input systems.

We’ll wrap up the day with a BBQ – join us for good soil and good company.

Please bring suitable footwear and attire for the farm walk.
