Introduction to Coppicing and Creating Coppice Products
Join Lost Woods and tutor Chris Keeler in a classic woodland setting for two immersive days in all things coppice!
This two-day course is ideal for those who want to develop their coppicing skills. The first day focuses on learning traditional techniques, and we will spend the second day discussing and making a range of hazel coppice products, using traditional hand-tools.
The course will cover:
- what is coppicing and why it is important
- the history of coppicing
- the use of billhooks, axes, froes and saws
- safely felling small diameter trees with hand tools
- how to deal with brash
- addressing pests and diseases
- selecting and ‘layering’ trees to ‘stock-up’ copse
- how to dress-out and grade rods
- the coppice ‘workshop’
- simple coppice products
- heritage coppice crafts
