Visit to Birchanger Wood with Ancient Tree Forum Essex
The ATF Essex local group would like to welcome you their last veteran tree walk of 2025.
This is an ancient woodland with hornbeam, sweet chestnut, field maple and hazel coppice, some oak and ash standards and a few old pollards.
Attendees will look at how the woods have changed due to human influence over the years, the encroachment of the town, road and infrastructure, view a multitude of interesting fungi and historic woodland management practices.
The Birchanger Wood Trust manage the woods. They are volunteers who have done a fantastic job maintaining the environment and carefully managing sections of the woods in rotation to carry on the historic practices.
