Visit the Great London Plane of Ely with the Ancient Tree Forum

Date : 8th April 2026 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Venue : King’s Ely, The Old Palace, ELY, CB7 4EW

Join the Ancient Tree Forum East Anglia Group at King’s Ely School for a special visit centered on the Great London Plane of Ely, the largest London Plane in the UK and one of the oldest.

David Day (Chair of Governors) and Dr James Talbot (Associate Professor of Engineering – University of Cambridge) will share the unfolding story of its care, including how support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund has enabled an ambitious programme to safeguard its future. Their presentation will also introduce the pioneering collaboration with engineers from the University of Cambridge, where advanced structural modelling and monitoring are helping guide a UK first approach to supporting an ancient tree of this scale.

Following a free buffet lunch, attedees will then visit the Old Palace Gardens for a guided walk with Will Temple, Grounds and Garden Manager, offering a rare opportunity to experience this extraordinary tree and its historic setting first hand.
