A career in agriculture didn’t seem likely growing up in deepest darkest south Essex and spending more time with dogs and cats than cows and sheep. However, after graduating from Bristol Vet School in 2013, I was completely besotted with cows and hell bent on working with farmers. If I wanted to work to make farming even better, getting farmers on side was key. I have always been interested in nature (a child twitcher!) and looking after the environment, something my school teachers sparked an interest in early on. I am particularly keen to bring farming into the public sphere and ensure the way we produce food is as ethical and sustainable as possible.
My first job as a practicing vet took me down to Cornwall where I stayed for 2.5 years working as a mixed practitioner. This was an excellent platform to learn more than what vet school can ever teach you about agriculture and farming. From here I was tempted back into academia at Bristol University to do a PhD looking at whether a participatory approach can work to reduce antimicrobial usage on UK dairy farms. I am in the second year of my PhD and learning a great deal from the dairy farmers in my project!
