Managing bracken with livestock: Farm walk & Innovative Farmers Field Lab

Date : 2nd October 2024 | 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Venue : The Penny Bun West Lane Askwith LS21 2JQ

Following the establishment of a partnership with Innovative Farmers and 8 project farmers across the protected landscapes, Pasture for Life have developed a Bracken Field Lab, focused on utilising livestock to manage bracken.

Kindly hosted by Bernie Davies at Denton Estate, arrive at The Penny Bun Pub (their pub on the estate) from 12pm noon for lunch before starting the session at 1pm.

We will spend the first part of the afternoon on an estate tour. Whilst not one of the project farms, the estate is challenged by bracken and an area of future focus. We will take a trailer to the moor and have a couple of demonstrations at a bracken site.

Upon returning to the pub, we’ll begin a series of presentations until 5pm. During this session there will be an introduction to the field lab and how it has evolved, a couple of the project farmers will share the management practices they are using and their experiences to date, before our academic partner Robin Pakeman from the James Hutton Institute will give us an insight into the bracken plant.

The session will conclude with an additional bracken management case study presentation before we open to the floor for questions and discussion.
