Voice of the future – What do NextGen farmers say about sustainable production?
The School of Sustainable Food and Farming at Harper Adams University event – part of Countryside COP, bringing together the rural community and businesses to showcase and inspire activity ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 – 22 November 2024.
Summary:
There’s a growing consumer awareness of sustainable farming, especially around the challenges we face with climate change, environmental degradation and ethical food production. Terms like “organic” have been helpful in building on the conversation for change, but do consumers really know about the complexities of sustainable farming? The evidence suggests not. Consumer suspicion about so called “greenwashing” is at fever pitch and awareness gaps dominate in regional and social-economic black holes. And that’s before we talk about a cost-of-living crisis which is a very real challenge in modern UK life – not to mention consumer price sensitivity in shopping baskets. In this session, chaired by Alex Hardie of the School of Sustainable Food & Farming, we speak to students at Shropshire’s Harper Adams University to get perspectives from the next generation of food producers and share ideas about one of the most consequential societal challenges of our time ahead of COP29 in Azerbaijan

Now in its fourth year, Countryside COP provides a platform for anyone interested in the countryside to hear how the UK’s rural economy and agriculture can help tackle climate change and improve sustainability.
The Countryside COP allows the rural community and UK agriculture to set the agenda and will serve to amplify policy asks and other messaging through many voices.
