Agroecological Innovations in Alternative Grain Systems

Date : 11th December 2025 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Venue : CAWR, Ryton Gardens, Coventry CV8 3LG / Online

Join CAWR at Ryton or online for this seminar on the future of grain systems with Chris Maughan and Leo Faedo.

Grain systems are the most widespread and impactful food systems on the planet. They contribute significantly to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and dietary illness. So what would it mean to shift them towards a more agroecological approach? What types of innovations would be required? And who should be involved and on what terms? This seminar explores these questions via presentations from two CAWR researchers who are working to improve the resilience of grain systems and support their transition towards agroecology – that is, integrating elements of ecology and social justice into their design and management.

In line with agroecological principles, the research presented spans the natural and social sciences. Leo Faedo will present his work on the TERRA Project which focuses on testing and selecting homeopathic preparations to support wheat plants to overcome hydric stress, achieve positive yields and maintain plant health in the context of climate change. Chris Maughan will present ongoing research on the innovative governance in regional grain networks in order to find new forms of organising which match and complement the integrative ambition of an agroecological paradigm.

The seminar will use these case studies to launch discussion and reflection on the future of grain systems, the challenges faced by those who work within the sector, and how the work can be more inclusive and relevant to all.
