Emergent Generation In The City: London

Date : 18th April 2026 | 11:00 am - 4:30 pm
Venue : Bridge Farm Community, Glenfrome Rd, Bristol BS16 1BQ, UK

Join Emergent Generation for a day at Sitopia Farm and explore a vision of a world where the food we eat nourishes both people and planet. Hear from author and lecturer, Carolyn Steel, enjoy lunch and time for connection, and take a farm walk with Em Gen member, Stevie Back. Gather for a drink and catch up in a local pub. Jonty Brunyee, Em Gen Founder and Director, will help facilitate the day and give attendees a network update.

Sitopia Farm is a modern, urban farm in Greenwich, London. They grow vegetables and flowers using organic, regenerative, and no-dig principles and sell direct to the local community, to chefs, and to florists. Through farming and events, courses and community volunteering, Sitopia Farm reconnects people to the soil, the joy of good food and flowers, and to each other.  It is a not-for-profit social enterprise. The beautiful two acre farm is based on partner farm, Woodlands Farm, a diverse 89 acre education and conservation project.

About the speakers

Carolyn Steel is a leading thinker on food and cities. She is the author of the award-winning Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives (2008) and Sitopia: How Food Can Save the World (2020). Her concept of sitopia, or food-place (from the Greek sitos, food + topos, place) has gained broad recognition across a wide range of fields in design, ecology, academia and the arts. Carolyn is also a Trustee of Sitopia Farm.

Stevie Back is the Grower and Community Engagement Coordinator at Sitopia Farm. She grew up in Lewisham and found her way to food growing along a wiggly path. She studied a Spanish degree, pursued a career in the charity sector focusing on education and community development, trained as a coach and a yoga teacher and spent many holidays volunteering on organic farms. Stevie is a committee member at Glengall Wharf Gardens and set up a thriving rooftop community garden in Sutton. She’s a systems thinker and a lifelong learner who is passionate about re-connecting people to themselves, each other and the land. Stevie has been a member of Emergent Generation for a number of years and is our go to yoga instructor at our summer gatherings!

Jonty is an award winning agroecological farmer at Conygree Farm and facilitator, and a commissioner for the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission. He co-founded Emergent Generation in 2022.
