Beacons of Excellence – Shaping the Future of Water Sustainability

Date : 11th June 2025 | 9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Venue : UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology

Join LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) for a day of learning and networking with industry leaders in sustainable water management and innovation!

The second Beacons of Excellence (BoE) showcase at LEAF Innovation Centre UK CEH is a day bringing together innovative farmers, leading researchers, policymakers, and funders to explore cutting-edge, practical water management solutions on-farm. This event focuses on sharing best practice and bringing together voices across the sector, from pioneers in sustainable water management to those newly starting on their journey.

What to expect?

  • Speaker sessions from Andrew Francis & Andrew Court (Beacons Farmers) and Mark Wilkinson (James Hutton Institute)
  • Live discussions on reservoir storage, soil moisture tools, irrigation technology, and Nature-based Solutions- to name a few
  • Interactive workshop led by CEH– learn how to monitor water flows, collect field data (using soil penetrometer and soil moisture probe)
  • Guided site tour of CEH’s ongoing sustainable water management and regeneration trials.
  • Panel Q&A with farmers and researchers
  • Opportunities to share your experiences, learn from others, and collaborate across the sector

Session Highlights:

  • Flood/Drought Mitigation with JHI’s Mark Wilkinson
  • Soil Health & Water Retention with Andrew Court
  • Reservoir Storage, Irrigation Innovation with Andrew Francis (Felixstowe Hydrocycle)
  • Workshop: NbS Monitoring, Grazing Studies & Catchment Tools with CEH
  • Use of Soil Penetrometers, E-Planner Tool Session & Monitoring Software

A Collaborative Opportunity:

This event is a chance for two-way learning. Attendees will leave with the practical tools e.g., how to use a soil penetrometer and a framework for monitoring water-related changes on their farms. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to wider research and development scope – supporting a better future for UK water management.
