Event

Making economic sense of mitigation measures to reduce crop carbon footprints

Date : 4th November 2024 | 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Venue : Online

YEN Zero (ADAS) event – part of Countryside COP, bringing together the rural community and businesses to showcase and inspire activity ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 – 22 November 2024.

Summary:

YEN Zero measures the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) associated with crop production at a field level, providing growers with product carbon footprints. The main objective of YEN Zero is to give growers and the wider industry a better understanding of what mitigation measures can be put in place on farm to reduce GHG emissions and the environmental impact of crop production. In this workshop, we will discuss the economics around mitigation strategies that can reduce crop carbon footprints to demonstrate how they can work in a wider farming business. The discussion will include the upfront costs of a range of strategies, in terms of time and money, and any savings or subsidies you may receive once implemented, including the SFI scheme. We will also explore the benefits of introducing legumes into rotations and how this affects inputs, yields and overall costs across rotation.

Speakers: Toby Townsend & Christina Baxter from the YEN Zero team – ADAS, Josh Brock – ADAS, Speaker (TBC) from Processors and Growers Research Organisation

Now in its fourth year, Countryside COP provides a platform for anyone interested in the countryside to hear how the UK’s rural economy and agriculture can help tackle climate change and improve sustainability.

The Countryside COP allows the rural community and UK agriculture to set the agenda and will serve to amplify policy asks and other messaging through many voices.
