Summer farm walk: Ripon Monitor Farm
Join AHDB for the final meeting and summer farm walk at Ripon Monitor Farm, hosted by Jonathan Fryatt.
This meeting will cover
- Fresh from the Northern Farmer awards, Jonathan (Farm Manager of Year) will be talking us through his journey of improving soil and business health; what’s worked and what hasn’t
- Nutrition and nitrogen use efficiency trial – how Jonathan is trying to improve the efficiency of nitrogen fertiliser and cut back the rates of what’s being applied. The trial has varying rates of liquid and foliar N, plus a carbon source added in winter wheat
- Companion cropping of peas and oats – the practice is of growing interest, with payments of £55/ha under the sustainable farming incentive (SFI) and the potential to reduce nitrogen fertiliser rates. Let’s talk about the opportunities and practicalities of this cropping
- Cover crop trial – do we need multi-species mixtures, or would the farm standard do the same job? We will be discussing what to consider when choosing your species and what to watch out for when growing a cover crop
Registration and refreshments will be available from 2:00pm, with presentations commencing at 2:30pm, and a BBQ/final send-off for Jonathan at 6:00 pm.
This meeting is free to attend, but please book a place so they can organise catering.
BASIS and NRoSO points will be available for attending.
Please bring suitable footwear and clothing for a field walk.
