Venue : Sleastonhow Lane Penrith CA10 1XL

Pasture for Life event at Sleastonhow near Penrith as part of the North Pasture & Profit Programme (Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, Forest of Bowland, North Pennines and Nidderdale)

Event kindly hosted by Tim Nicholson at Sleastonhow near Penrith (the home of Carbon Calling). Building on our time already spent with mentor Kate Roberts from How The Earth Thinks, we are excited to continue to explore the fascinating topic of soil microbes, with this event encompassing both theory sessions and a farm tour.

Please arrive from 10am for refreshments, with the session starting at 10.30am. The workshop sessions will cover everything you need to know about your soil microbes, what they do for you, and what you can do for them, how they interact with plants, animals and each other, including clear ways in which we can support these small organisms.

A range of practical techniques will be discussed, using not just microbes as tools, but showing how your animals, plants and land can also be used to nurture diversity and abundance in your soil ecosystem. We intend for the session to highlight the wide ranging benefits of enhancing the microbial life in your soil, can bring, such as:

  • Increased nutritional content of your forage
  • Provision of natural pharmacology for animal health
  • Greater flavour and nutritional complexity of meat
  • Improved hydrology on your land
  • Ongoing carbon sequestration
  • An underpinning of ecological diversity on your farm
