UK sheep farming and the sustainability agenda: What do we know and where are we going?

National Sheep Association event – part of Countryside COP, bringing together the rural community and businesses to showcase and inspire activity ahead of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 – 22 November 2024.

Summary: 

Join NSA and the Harper Adams Sustainable School of Food and Farming for an exciting morning discussing sustainability in the UK sheep sector.

The event will give attendees the opportunity to hear from leading industry experts including NSA Chief Executive Phil Stocker,  Professor Michael Lee and Professor Jude Capper from Harper Adams University and case study farmers from the newly launched NSA report – Sheep and the sustainability agenda.

Agenda:

09:30 Tea and coffee served on arrival.

10:00 Welcome.

10:00 ‘UK sheep farming and the sustainability agenda’. Panel discussion with Phil Stocker, NSA, Professor Michael Lee, HAU, Professor Jude Capper, including case study farmers from the report.

10:45 Active sessions on the positive attributes of the sheep sector split into short interactive sessions featuring farmers sharing practical advice on aspects of farm sustainability including flock health; grassland management, trees and hedgerows, Sustainability metrics and methane.

11:45 Take home messages led by Phil Stocker.

12.15 Event closes.

An optional farm tour is available after the event. On site cafes will also be open for those wishing to purchase lunch.

13:00 Harper Adams farm tour – ‘Principles of sustainability apply across the board’ – Enjoy the opportunity to view the Harper Adams farm including its sheep, beef, dairy and pig enterprises. The tour will include information on how each of the livestock enterprises is taking steps to a sustainable future.

Now in its fourth year, Countryside COP provides a platform for anyone interested in the countryside to hear how the UK’s rural economy and agriculture can help tackle climate change and improve sustainability.

The Countryside COP allows the rural community and UK agriculture to set the agenda and will serve to amplify policy asks and other messaging through many voices.
