Bi-cropping: what future for more complex rotations?
Organised by Allerton Project
Join us at Brixworth Farming to discuss some of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to bi-cropping and explore the potential for more diverse crop rotations in the future.
Bi-cropping, intercropping, companion cropping… regardless of the method in question, there is increasing interest in the practice of growing more than one crop in the same field, at the same time. And there’s emerging payments to be made for it too, whether that be through market premiums such as Wildfarmed Wheat, or through the new SFI companion crop action (CIPM3). However, regardless of the method behind the madness, there can be substantive barriers to achieving a successful bicrop, particularly in relation to establishment, pests and weather conditions. Not to mention how exactly it fits within a sustainable rotation.
We will hear from Ian Matts, who is currently trialling an undersown spring wheat crop with clover, and also Henry Tyrrell, who is undertaking a living mulch trial with Kings.
