Getting wildflowers to work on your farm for business and biodiversity

Date : 18th February 2025 | 6:30 pm
Venue : Online

Part of the RSPB Hope Farm Technical Webinar Series 2025

We will discuss the practicalities of managing wildflowers and how they can deliver the most on farm, making the biggest difference for farmland wildlife, and sustainable food production. We’ll hear from farmers and their amazing experiences with managing wildflowers on their farm, from advisors who are experts in the industry for how to look after pollinators with wildflower and other habitat management, and from research about the nuts and bolts behind what wildflowers can do for crop husbandry.

The Hope farm team will share lessons learnt at hope farm on wildflower margin management on our clay soils, before hearing from John Secker, a farmer who has delivered some incredible wildlife habitats on his farm in the Brecks with his cultivated arable margins on chalky land. He will share his experiences and lessons learnt on managing cultivated margins, which have incredible potential to deliver wildflower and other resources on farmland.

James Gillies, a conservation advisor with over 20 years of both practical and advisory experience, working nationally and locally with different wildlife and conservation bodies, will give his perspectives on fitting in effective wildflower management into a profitable farm business.

Finally, we’ll hear from Rachel Richards, an ecologist, naturalist and B-Lines Officer for Buglife. She will be talking about how to provide not just food for pollinators in the form of flower-rich habitats, but also share knowledge on what pollinators need to thrive throughout their whole life cycle, from shelter to nesting habitats and food provision.
