Webinar on reducing Nitrogen use
With spring finally arriving and grass growing well, it is time to discuss how to maximise yields and quality from your pastures and silage fields while minimising input costs. This Organic Research Centre webinar launches the GreenGrass project which aims to identify novel strategies to reduce use of N fertiliser on grasslands while maintaining productivity and profits. We’ll hear from James Standen, Newcastle University Farms Director, about how his carbon footprint and how he is reducing use of N fertiliser on their mixed dairy and arable farm. Elaine Jewkes, will share her expertise on how to minimise losses to the environment from nitrogen sources (both fertilisers and manure). Paul Muto will share his practical experience from research and industry on the best strategies to improve legume contents in pastures and leys. And Alma Joensen from Car Y Mor will talk about their successful trials with seaweed biostimulants on grasslands. The event will be chaired by Julia Cooper, Senior Researcher in Crop Diversity & Agronomy who will facilitate the discussion with an aim to pinpoint some clear next steps we can all take to reduce our reliance on purchased N fertiliser.
