Soil Farmer of the Year Farm Walk – Third Place, Ben Richards
Part of Farm Carbon Toolkit’s 2024 Soil Farmer of the Year farm walks series
Ben Richards has been awarded Third Place in this year’s Soil Farmer of the Year competition. As a dairy farmer based in Cornwall, Ben has built his system around resilient soils to provide the forage and nutrition his herd needs rather than relying on imports.
The dairy platform focuses on using herbal leys to manage the challenges of mixed soils on the farm, with some very heavy clays and areas of lighter sands. Ben has also established an agroforestry system, designed to provide further feed for the cattle and also provide a natural drainage solution.
The farm walk will begin at 14:00 and will provide an opportunity to further hear and see how Ben’s management strategy has benefitted his business, leading him to be awarded Third Place in this year’s Soil Farmer of the Year competition.
