Event
‘Understanding your soils – Structure and cultivation’ ADAS events
Throughout May, ADAS is hosting free soil structure and cultivation demonstration events for local farmers with soil cultivation expert Philip Wright.
With wet weather and flooding this spring forcing farmers to rethink their crop schedules and livestock movements, these events will focus on how to repair and maintain soil structure and how to apply the right cultivation practices for the challenging conditions.
Philip Wright has almost 40 years of experience working in the area of soil cultivation, having been Technical Director of Simba for 28 years before becoming an independent soil advisor in 2007. He is a member of the Institution of Agricultural Engineers, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and the British Society of Soil Science, and is also an Associate Lecturer of the BASIS Soil and Water Management courses run by Lincoln University.
Starting with an introduction to the basics of soil structure and a review of host farm machinery, Philip will then conduct an in-field practical demonstration on how to assess soils with a spade and the effect of different tillage techniques on the soil profile.
